July 4th has always been one of my favorite holidays. There is just something about it that feels so special to me — the summer air, good food, family gathered together, and the simple joy of slowing down for a day. I love the red, white, and blue, the cookouts, the laughter, and the feeling of celebrating freedom with the people I love.
This year, our Fourth of July will look a little quieter than usual.
I am about one week out from surgery, so I will be spending the holiday at home, resting and healing. It is not exactly the busy, festive Fourth I might have planned, but I am trying to see the blessing in a slower day. Sometimes life has a way of making us pause, even when we would rather be up doing all the things.
Even in the quiet, there is still so much to be thankful for.
This week has been full of tender moments. I got to see my teenage daughter head off to her very first job, and my mama heart was so proud. There is something so bittersweet about watching your children grow up. One minute, they are little, needing you for everything, and then suddenly, they are stepping into new seasons of responsibility and independence. I am so thankful I get to be here for these moments, even the ones that make my heart feel a little emotional.
Another big milestone is happening too — my sweet granddaughter is turning one year old. I wish so much that I could be there to celebrate her first birthday in person. It makes me sad to miss such a special day, because being a grandma is one of the sweetest gifts God has given me. But the good news is that she will be coming out in August, and I am already looking forward to holding her, loving on her, and soaking up all the grandma time I can get.
So this year, my Fourth of July is a mixture of gratitude, missing people I love, and learning to be content in a quieter season.
While I am healing, I have been keeping busy in my own little way. I am working on school, setting up my Etsy shop, dreaming up creative ideas, and adjusting to a very wonky sleep schedule. Recovery is not always easy, and some days feel long, but I am grateful for the time to think, pray, create, and rest.
Of course, no Fourth of July would be complete without thinking about the food. I love a good BBQ. For me, the perfect Fourth of July plate would probably include pork ribs, potato salad, some vegetables on the side, chips and dip, and maybe a few cookies to end the day on a sweet note. Nothing too fancy — just good, simple food that feels like summer and home.
Food has such a way of bringing people together. Whether it is a big cookout with family and friends or a quiet plate at home, those familiar dishes can make the day feel special.
So I would love to know — what are your favorite dishes for the Fourth of July? Are you a ribs person? Hamburgers and hot dogs? Potato salad? Baked beans? Watermelon? A favorite dessert your family always makes?
This year may be quieter for my family and me, but I am reminded that a meaningful holiday does not have to be loud or perfect. Sometimes it looks like resting on the couch, spending quality time with your daughter and husband, thanking God for family, missing your grandbaby, dreaming about August, and enjoying a simple meal at home.
And that is still a beautiful way to celebrate.
Wishing you a peaceful, joy-filled, and grace-filled Fourth of July.
Blessings,
Michelle
