There is something so peaceful about a garden. Whether it is a big backyard garden, a few pots on the porch, or a vase of fresh flowers on the table, gardens have a way of slowing us down and reminding us of God’s goodness.
This time of year, I love thinking about all the beautiful things that come from the ground. Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, berries, herbs, and flowers all remind us that God is a Creator who loves beauty, nourishment, and growth. A garden does not grow all at once. It takes time, care, patience, watering, sunshine, and sometimes a little pruning.
Isn’t that so much like our walk with Jesus?
In John 15:5, Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” That picture is so simple, but so powerful. A branch cannot bear fruit if it is disconnected from the vine. In the same way, we cannot grow spiritually in our own strength. We need to stay close to Jesus. We need His Word, His presence, His grace, and His love.
Gardens also remind us that growth often happens quietly. We may plant a seed and not see anything for a while, but under the soil, something is happening. Roots are forming. Life is beginning. Sometimes our faith feels that way, too. We may not always see what God is doing right away, but that does not mean He is not working.
Fruit and vegetables also remind us of provision. God could have made the world plain, but He filled it with color, flavor, and beauty. Red strawberries, yellow squash, green cucumbers, purple flowers, and bright tomatoes all show us a glimpse of His creativity. He gives us food not only to survive, but also to enjoy.
Flowers remind me of how tenderly God cares for His creation. Jesus said in Matthew 6 that if God clothes the flowers of the field, we can trust Him to care for us too. That is such a comforting thought. The same God who paints petals and grows gardens is also watching over our homes, our families, our worries, and our hearts.
A garden also teaches patience. Nothing grows well when it is rushed. Seeds need time. Roots need depth. Fruit needs the right season. In the same way, God grows us little by little. He teaches us through ordinary days, answered prayers, hard seasons, joyful moments, and quiet mornings.
So this week, maybe we can look at gardens a little differently. Maybe the tomatoes on the counter, the flowers on the porch, or the herbs growing in a little pot can remind us to stay rooted in Christ. Maybe they can remind us that God is still growing good things in us.
A grace-filled home does not have to be perfect. It can be simple, colorful, lived-in, and full of little reminders that Jesus is near.
This week, I hope you notice the beauty around you. Pick the flowers. Slice the tomatoes. Thank God for the sunshine. Share something fresh with someone you love. And remember that the same Lord who grows gardens is also faithfully growing you. I am including a cucumber-tomato salad that I hope you will try during these hot summer days. Enjoy!
