Sometimes we think happiness must come from something exciting, expensive, or out of the ordinary. We may believe we need a vacation, a new purchase, or a major change before we can feel refreshed.
But often, the things that give us the most life are simple.
They are the quiet, familiar moments that help us slow down, breathe a little deeper, and remember that life is still good.
What feels life-giving will be different for each person. It may be gardening, listening to music, baking, reading, spending time outdoors, or talking with someone you love. The important thing is learning to notice what restores your heart.
Beginning With God
For me, one of the most life-giving things is reading my Bible.
It does not always have to be a long study session. Sometimes it is simply reading a few verses while drinking my morning coffee. God’s Word reminds me that I am not alone and gives me comfort, wisdom, and hope.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
When life feels confusing or heavy, Scripture gently brings my attention back to what is true.
The Simple Joys of Summer
The smell of freshly cut grass during the summertime is another small thing that brings me joy.
That familiar scent reminds me of sunshine, warm days, family gatherings, and the comfort of home. God created us with the ability to enjoy simple things through our senses—the smell of flowers, the sound of birds, the warmth of the sun, and the feeling of a summer breeze.
These ordinary details can become reminders of His goodness and creativity.
Coffee With My Husband
Coffee with my husband is another life-giving part of my day.
It may simply be two people sitting together with their coffee, but those ordinary moments of connection matter.
Marriage is not built only through vacations, anniversaries, and major celebrations. It is also built through shared routines, morning conversations, laughter, and time spent being present with one another.
Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen around the kitchen table.
Time With My Teenager
Watching a television show with my teenager is another simple pleasure that means a great deal to me.
As children grow older, time together begins to look different. Connection may happen while watching a favorite show, laughing at the same scene, or talking about the characters afterward.
It may seem small, but those moments create shared memories.
Quality time does not always require an elaborate plan. Sometimes love looks like sitting beside someone and enjoying something together.
Familiar Entertainment
I also enjoy watching some of my favorite YouTube channels.
There is something comforting about returning to creators who inspire me, teach me something new, make me laugh, or simply help me relax.
Whether the topic is faith, home decorating, cooking, creativity, or everyday life, those familiar videos can provide a peaceful break in the day.
Rest does not always mean sleeping. Sometimes it means giving our minds permission to enjoy something simple.
Family and Creativity
Spending time with family is deeply life-giving to me.
Family life is not always perfect, but there is something special about being with the people who know your story. A shared meal, a long conversation, laughter around the table, or a simple hug can become more meaningful than we realize.
Creating designs for my Etsy shop, Grace Filled Cottage, also gives me life.
I enjoy choosing colors, developing ideas, pairing images with meaningful words, and imagining how a design might bring joy to someone else.
Creativity allows us to take an idea and turn it into something real. It reminds me that God is the ultimate Creator and that our ability to make beautiful things reflects a small part of His creativity.
Noticing What Restores Us
Life-giving things do not have to be impressive.
They may look like:
A cup of coffee.
A favorite Bible passage.
Freshly cut grass.
A television show with someone you love.
A creative project.
A family conversation.
A quiet moment at home.
These things do not remove every hardship, but they can strengthen us while we walk through difficult seasons.
James 1:17 reminds us:
“Every good and perfect gift is from above.”
Perhaps part of living gratefully is learning to notice those gifts while they are happening.
Today, I am thankful for God’s Word, the signs of summer, coffee with my husband, time with my teenager, familiar entertainment, family connections, and the opportunity to create.
None of these things are extravagant, but they are meaningful.
Sometimes the simplest things are exactly what our hearts need.
A Little Reflection
What are the simple, life-giving things in your life?
Take a few moments to write down five things that help you feel peaceful, connected, encouraged, or creative.
You may discover that some of your greatest blessings have been quietly present all along.
Blessings,
Michelle
