When Life Feels Heavy: Finding Joy in Prayer, Simple Pleasures, and Encouraging Books

Sometimes life feels heavier than we expected. During those seasons, prayer reminds us that we are never walking alone. God meets us in our worries, our weariness, and even in the quiet moments when we do not know what to say.

Along with prayer, I have found that small pleasures can help brighten difficult days—a warm cup of coffee, fresh flowers, a favorite meal, time spent with someone we love, or a comforting book. These simple things do not take away our problems, but they can remind us that goodness is still present.

A Few Books That Have Encouraged Me

The Lifegiving Table by Sally Clarkson

The Lifegiving Table shares the importance of gathering around the table to enjoy food, conversation, faith, and fellowship. Sally Clarkson reminds us that a meal does not have to be elaborate to be meaningful. Our tables can become places where relationships are strengthened, memories are created, and God’s love is shared through everyday hospitality.

Aggressively Happy by Joy Marie Clarkson

In Aggressively Happy, Joy Marie Clarkson reminds us that happiness does not require us to ignore sorrow or pretend that life is perfect. Instead, we can intentionally notice the beauty, goodness, humor, and love that God has placed around us. It is an encouraging reminder to resist cynicism and continue choosing gratitude and joy, even during challenging seasons.

Susan Branch’s Books

I have also enjoyed many of Susan Branch’s beautiful books. Her handwritten stories, watercolor illustrations, recipes, memories, and reflections make each book feel like a peaceful visit to a cozy cottage. Her books encourage us to slow down, enjoy our homes, appreciate the changing seasons, and find beauty in ordinary days.

With Heart and Soul: Favorite Recipes from Our Friends and Family by Roxie Kelley and Friends

With Heart and Soul is more than a collection of recipes. It celebrates the warmth of preparing food, welcoming others, and sharing treasured traditions with family and friends. Its comforting recipes, charming illustrations, and homemaking ideas make it a lovely book to enjoy slowly and return to often.

Holy Hygge: Creating a Place for People to Gather and the Gospel to Grow by Jamie Erickson

Holy Hygge beautifully connects the comfort and warmth of home with Christian hospitality. Jamie Erickson encourages us to create welcoming spaces where people feel safe, loved, and cared for. It reminds us that hospitality is not about having a perfect home—it is about opening our doors, sharing what we have, and allowing the love of Christ to grow through genuine relationships.

These books all remind me in different ways that our ordinary lives can hold deep meaning. A shared meal, a welcoming home, a good book, a sincere prayer, or a quiet moment of gratitude can become sacred when we receive them as gifts from God.

Life will not always be easy, but we can continue looking for the small reminders of God’s goodness. Joy may arrive quietly—in a cup of coffee, a familiar recipe, a heartfelt conversation, or a few peaceful pages before bedtime. Sometimes those small moments are exactly what our hearts need.

Blessings,

Michelle
